What "Wall Thickness" Actually Refers To
A UPVC profile is a hollow multi-chamber section; wall thickness is the thickness of the PVC skin and internal webs. Classification conventions (per EN 12608 thinking) grade visible external walls most strictly — Class A ≥ 2.8 mm, Class B ≥ 2.5 mm, Class C thinner — because external walls take screws, welds and weather.
Four Things Thicker Walls Buy You
- Screw retention. Hinges, locks and friction stays anchor into the wall. Thin walls strip under torque and loosen under cycling — the root cause of sagging sashes.
- Weld strength. Corner welds fuse wall material; a 2.5 mm weld cross-section carries meaningfully more load than 2.0 mm. Corner failure is a window write-off.
- Wind-load stiffness. Deflection under gusts falls as wall section rises (with reinforcement doing the heavy lifting). For exposed and upper-floor openings this is a safety spec, not a preference.
